Catching Pals: what raises your odds and what does not
Catching is the loop the whole game hangs off, and it is also the topic with the most invented numbers written about it. Pocketpair has never published the capture formula, so every calculator online is a community approximation. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is guessed, and names the tips that are simply false.
What actually changes your odds
The displayed catch percentage responds to a handful of inputs, and these are the ones worth playing around.
- Remaining health. The single biggest lever. Take the target as low as you dare without killing it.
- Status effects. A Pal that is asleep or otherwise disabled is meaningfully easier to hold.
- Sphere tier. Each tier carries a higher capture power, and 1.0 raised several existing tiers by a point or two.
- The species itself. Each species carries its own capture difficulty value, so two Pals at identical health are not equally catchable.
- Throwing from behind. There is a genuine bonus for hitting a Pal in the back, and it is worth doing on every throw since it costs nothing.
On the back bonus specifically. The bonus is real, but the size of it is not settled. Two figures circulate and they are not even in the same units, one describing a percentage uplift and the other a flat addition to the capture rate, and each traces back to a single low quality site. So throw from behind, and disregard any page that quotes you a precise multiplier for it.
How much of the maths is actually known
Very little, and this is worth being clear about because it explains the contradictions you will find. Pocketpair has never published the capture probability formula. Every capture calculator is a community reconstruction, and the most transparent of them admits in its own methodology note that its curves are calibrated to datamined version 0.7.3 data within roughly five percentage points, with 1.0 sphere values slotted into a formula that has never been recovered.
The practical consequence: use the number the game shows you, and treat any external calculator as a rough comparison tool rather than a source of truth.
Alpha Pals and bosses
Alpha Pals, the oversized named ones with a health bar across the screen, are catchable and follow the same rules with a penalty applied. The figure that survived fact checking is that an Alpha is roughly 0.7 times as easy to catch as a wild example of the same species, corroborated across three separately edited wiki pages after the 1.0 release.
A claim you should ignore: that Alphas also take heavily reduced damage and carry a health multiplier. That traces to a single low quality source and could not be corroborated, so it was dropped from this guide rather than softened.
Tower bosses are a separate category and cannot be caught at all. They are covered in the tower boss guide.
Myths worth deleting from your notes
- Catch ten of a species for the bonus. It is five in 1.0, reduced from twelve. Ten was never right.
- There is a consecutive catch streak bonus. No such mechanic exists, and by the fact check none ever did.
- Precise sphere module bonus values. Numbers do circulate for the small flat bonuses that modules add, but they come from one stale source and should not be treated as 1.0 figures.
Frequently asked questions
Does throwing a Pal Sphere from behind help in Palworld?
Yes, hitting a Pal in the back gives a genuine capture bonus, and it costs nothing to do. The exact size of the bonus is not reliably documented: the two figures in circulation are not even in the same units and each comes from a single low quality source.
Are Alpha Pals harder to catch?
Yes. An Alpha is about 0.7 times as easy to catch as a wild example of the same species, a figure corroborated across three separately edited wiki pages after the 1.0 release. Claims that Alphas also take heavily reduced damage are uncorroborated.
Is there a catch streak bonus in Palworld?
No. There is no consecutive catch or ten in a row mechanic, and there never has been. The capture bonus is per species and completes at five captures in 1.0.
Is the Palworld capture formula known?
No. Pocketpair has never published it, so every capture calculator online is a community approximation. Several are openly calibrated against pre 1.0 datamined values.
