The Great Vault, explained simply

The Great Vault is WoW's weekly reward chest. It opens at your region's weekly reset with up to nine items, three earned from raids, three from dungeons and three from world activities, and you take exactly one. What appears depends on what each character did in the week before, counted against the thresholds below.
It is per character, so an account with six alts has six vaults, each filled separately. That is the whole reason a tracker exists: the game shows you one vault at a time.

You earn vault choices from three activity rows:
- Raid: kill 2 / 4 / 6 raid bosses
- Mythic+: complete 1 / 4 / 8 dungeons (reward scales with key level)
- World: finish 2 / 4 / 8 world activities like delves and world events
The more thresholds you hit, the more choices you get. VaultAlts tracks all three rows for every character so you always know what one more run would unlock.
How the three rows fill in Midnight Season 2

One rule ties the three rows together: a slot that takes several runs to unlock is priced at the lowest of the runs that fill it. Two Heroic raid kills and four Normal kills open two raid slots, but the second slot is a Normal slot. If nothing in the vault is worth taking
You are never forced to take an item. Instead of one of the nine, you can take 6 Thalassian Tokens of Merit, or, when at least three slots are unlocked, 1 Nebulous Voidcore, the bonus roll currency Season 2 added to the vault. The tokens are spent at Vaultkeeper Elysa beside the vault.

Voidcores changed in Season 2. Blizzard's Curse of Ula'tek notes make Nebulous Voidcores a vault reward from the first week of Season 2, cut the cost of a raid bonus roll to 1 Voidcore (it was 2), and let Orin Straylight in Silvermoon hand out one extra Voidcore a week from the eighth week of the season. Voidcores left over from Season 1 were turned into gold when that season ended.
Where the vault is and when it opens
In Midnight the Great Vault stands in Silvermoon City's bank building, to the left of the bankers. You can also open its window from the Mythic+ Dungeons tab or the Journeys tab of the Adventure Guide, or by right clicking its icon on the world map, without walking there.
It opens at the weekly reset: Tuesday 15:00 UTC in the Americas, Wednesday 04:00 UTC in Europe (05:00 CET, moved from 08:00 CET on ), and Wednesday 23:00 UTC in Korea and Taiwan. Blizzard describes that instant as the moment the vault begins granting rewards for the previous week. Frequently asked questions
How many items can I take from the Great Vault each week?
One. Up to nine are offered, three per row, and you choose a single item. If none fits, you can take 6 Thalassian Tokens of Merit instead, or 1 Nebulous Voidcore once at least three slots are unlocked.
Do Heroic dungeons count for the Great Vault?
Yes. Heroic, Mythic 0, Mythic+ and Timewalking dungeons all count toward the 1, 4 and 8 dungeon thresholds. The item level of a slot follows the runs that fill it, so a Heroic run unlocks a slot at a lower item level than a keystone run does.
Do Raid Finder kills count toward the raid row?
Yes. Kills in the season's raids on any difficulty count toward 2, 4 and 6 bosses, and Blizzard's Season 2 notes list Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic and Mythic vault rewards separately, each at its own item level.
When can I open the Great Vault?
After your region's weekly reset: Tuesday 15:00 UTC in the Americas, Wednesday 04:00 UTC in Europe, Wednesday 23:00 UTC in Korea and Taiwan. The vault then offers rewards for the week that just ended.
